Thanksgiving! Known in Spanish as “día de acción de gracias”.
Thanksgiving Day is an annual national holiday in the United States celebrating the harvest and other blessings of the past year. Americans generally believe that their Thanksgiving is modelled on a 1621 harvest feast shared by the English colonists (Pilgrims) of Plymouth and the Wampanoag people.
The American holiday is particularly rich in legend and symbolism, and the traditional fare of the Thanksgiving meal typically includes turkey, bread stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, and pumpkin pie. When it comes to traveling, the holiday is often the busiest of the year, as family members or even close friends gather with one another. Thanksgiving Day is celebrated on Thursday, November 26, 2020.
Some countries have Thanksgiving celebrations that are very similar to the American custom, such as:
- Canada
- China
- Germany
- Grenada
- Japan
- Norfolk Island
- South Korea
- Liberia
- Vietnam
The celebrations of these countries are not all on the same day as the American Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday of each November, but they all celebrate to give thanks.
Nowadays, this tradition is almost worldwide because populations migrate, and they incorporate these customs to the places where they have migrated.
Thanksgiving Day is mainly composed of three activities: spending time with family, watching football, and eating a hearty meal of turkey. While football season may look a bit different this year and you might see less friends and family than you’d like, you’ll want to do more than scroll through Instagram while commercials play, and you wait for the food to be done. What better way to keep the conversation going than with Thanksgiving Day facts?

- Each year, about 46 million turkeys are cooked.
- The majority of Americans secretly dislike classic Thanksgiving dishes but will eat them anyway.
- Many people enjoy Thanksgiving leftovers more than the meal itself.
