Should I use 'ME or I'?

I bet this question has come to your mind more than once… These words are often confused by English speakers so here, at Hello!! ENGLISH SCHOOL we want you to know the secrets…

You should know there are two rules.

1. “I” is a subject pronoun (‘yo’ en Español). Here’s an example: if someone is looking at old pictures of you, for and they ask “who is it” you would say:

• It is I.
• It is Bea.

Many people would have said “it is me”. This is wrong. In spanish it would translate like this: ‘es me’. Doesn’t sound correct, does it?

This takes us to the second rule: “Me” in English is an indirect object pronoun.

Here’s an example:

• Mrs. Isabel Smith gave a jacket to me. The subject is Isabel, the direct object is ‘book’ and the indirect object is ‘me’.
