What does it mean? Easter is a spring festival of new life. As a pagan tradition it is the beginning of growth and new life after the cold, winter months. The name comes from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the dawn and spring – Eostre. For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and practising Christians attend special church services at Easter time. Easter celebrates life and rebirth, which is why we see lots of symbols of new life and fertility at Easter, like eggs, chicks and rabbits. When is it? Unlike Christmas, Easter isn’t on the same date each year. It takes place on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. Schoolchildren and students in the UK have a two-week holiday at Easter time which is almost as long as the Christmas holiday. It’s also the first public holiday after Christmas and everyone looks forward to their Easter break as a moment to relax, have a short holiday or visit family and friends. Chocolate eggs For most British children, Easter means chocolate Easter eggs. The shops are full of bright Easter displays decorated with chicks, rabbits and flowers, all with the objective of selling chocolate eggs in huge numbers. And it works! 90 million chocolate eggs are sold in the UK each year, and each child receives on average eight chocolate eggs. The eggs are sold in cardboard boxes and sometimes there’s more packaging than chocolate!  Some people believe that too much chocolate is eaten at Easter time and most doctors and dentists would advise people to eat Easter eggs in moderation. Other ‘egg-straordinary’ traditions In the UK, chocolate is definitely the most popular way to enjoy eggs at Easter. But there are some less sugary traditions, too. Chickens’ eggs are painted and decorated to give as presents, and eggs are also hidden for children to find as part of an ‘egg hunt’. Some places even hold competitions to see who can roll an egg down a hill without it breaking! Hot cross buns are typical cakes that are made at Easter time. They are like spiced bread rolls with raisins and they always have a cross shape on top. They are delicious served hot with butter.

A continuación vamos a detallaros una serie de consejos, acerca de cómo seleccionar el libro adecuado: Cuando los niños son pequeños, menos de 2 años, es conveniente elegir libros con imágenes grandes y colores brillantes. Además, la historia debe ser muy sencilla. Para niños entre 2 y 3 años, es conveniente que la temática esté vinculada con su entorno habitual, la guardería, la familia, la casa… Las historias deben ser cortas y utilizar estructuras gramaticales repetitivas. Los libros con solapas suelen encantarles. A partir de los 3 años, los niños aumentan su capacidad para mantener la atención por lo que las historias pueden ser un poco más largas y complejas. En esta etapa es recomendable abordar temáticas como los animales, los vehículos o los números. A partir de los 4 años, los niños comienzan a leer por sí mismos, en este punto es importante adaptar siempre el cuento al nivel de lectura del niño. Los libros con letras mayúsculas y poco texto son perfectos para los niños en esta etapa. Entre los 5 y los 7 años, los libros deben incluir abundantes ilustraciones, contar con menos de 50 páginas y un vocabulario simple. A la hora de elegir temáticas, es mejor decantarse por historias donde los protagonistas sean niños de una edad similar a la suya. A partir de los 8 años, los pequeños ya tienen unos intereses específicos, es bueno potenciar las temáticas que más les gustan, para desarrollar aún más su amor por la lectura. Entre los 8 y los 12 años, los libros de aventuras suelen ser sus favoritos y los que más logran captar su atención. En esta edad, las diferencias de nivel de inglés y de lectura están más marcadas, por lo tanto, es muy importante ajustar la dificultad del libro al nivel actual del pequeño, para evitar que se frustre y abandone la lectura. Los niños de 12 años o más suelen elegir por si mismos los títulos que leen, como padres es adecuado supervisar la adecuación del contenido de los mismos a su nivel de madurez.

These are  some benefits: Gifts Not all pen pals exchange gifts but there are some who will sneak in something special along with their letter or postcard. These items can range from food to keychains to other little goodies from their home town. You will have a piece of them and their country with you from miles away! Knowledge Having a pen pal is a very unique learning experience that you cannot get elsewhere. Not only is it fun but you can gain knowledge about their culture and learn more about them as a person and where they live. Having this connection will allow you to expand your awareness of the world that surrounds you and it may even help you to realize certain things in your life that you may have not considered before. Opportunity Depending on how close you become to your pen pal, you may have the chance to visit other countries and cities to meet up with them. You can make life-long friends in the process and even be able to practice your writing and communication skills. You get mail We all love the feeling of opening our mailboxes and seeing incoming mails from friends . Having a pen pal will add on to this excitement. Plus, you can penpal considerably faster using your ipad or phone rather than sending factual letters. Having a pen pal is something everyone should highly consider. Many people have met wonderful friends who they still keep in touch with until this very day. Spring is the season when nature bursts back into life in an explosion of sight, sound and colour. What better invitation to get out and explore? After the long, dark, winter months, spring is literally a breath of fresh air. And as the days get longer, the nights get shorter, and it starts to feel warmer, nature responds in a big way. Here are four reasons to get out and enjoy the season, so what are you waiting for? 1. Days are longer!! For those looking forward to shorter nights and longer days, then look no further than 20 March. This is the spring – or vernal – equinox when the Earth’s orbit around the sun results in almost equal lengths of day and night. The spring equinox is the astronomical start to the season, as opposed to 1 March which is the meteorological start. 2. Flowers bloom There are so many wildflowers that deserve your attention coming into bloom at this time of year – and not just the obvious bluebells later in the season, although they are a spectacle which does have to be seen! Pop into your local woodland and seek out some of the other beautiful wildflowers on display. It’s best to go early in the season before the leaves on the trees close out the light. Make a beeline for yellow celandines, delicate white wood anemones and pungent wild garlic. Classics such as native daffodils and primroses are also instantly recognisable treats. 3. Nature’s confetti fills the air Blossom is arguably one of most iconic heralds of spring. Dense clusters of blooming flowers, whether on hawthorn, blackthorn or fruiting trees, are short-lived so it’s best to enjoy them before the subtle white and pink petals fall to the earth like nature’s own confetti. We’ve come to associate the spring blossom with ornamental fruit trees such as cherries, but it also includes plums and apples. Blossom is a sign of winter receding and the promise of a harvest to come. 4. Walks delight the senses Last, but by no means least, take a walk in the countryside either as the sun comes up and starts to warm the air or last thing in the evening as the sun begins to go down. It doesn’t matter where you go, it could be down a winding country lane or into some woodland, just spend a few minutes taking in all the sights, sounds and smells around you as nature springs back to life after its winter slow down. If you should happen to go into the woods, then swathes of white snowdrops, blazes of bluebells or pungent pockets of wild garlic are truly set to delight your senses.
